Riffing on Van Eyck’s famous painting about marriage, the Arnolfini portrait, the connection between the artworks reveals itself with the chandelier overhead and the convex distortion through which the observer views the scene. But that’s where this painting diverges because the subject here has eschewed marriage, instead committing to her artistry, as a writer.
